Classes and cross classes?

So I'm playing with my friend and he says he's going for a paladin build but I didn't see a paladin class. I'm assuming it's a made up class using stats and certain weapons.

Can someone explain how builds work in this game? Do you build for a certain weapon? Is there any class that is more challenging than others? Are all classes equal?
