Character Slot

It appears when you make a character they stay in that slot, I made a ranger which was my 5th character, I deleted one of my energy alts (the one in the 4th slot) so my ranger would go up the character list, but when I remade that energy alt (different class and name) it put it in the 4th slot again. and bumped the ranger back to the 5th slot.

Is there anyway to stop this from happening or is my ranger forever destined to be in slot 5?
