[ALL SPOILERS] S5 "Flesh&Stone"

I am re-watching and perhaps it has been explained but I'm just missing it (so ignore my ignorance) but if Amy had died would River then cease to exist? I just can't wrap my head around it. I know they keep meeting at different points in their timelines out of order... But would it change anything?
