Why does the corporate income tax exist at all?

If actual incidence isn't placed on the corporation, why bother taxing them?

Also, it seems as if corporate income taxes don't produce their desired re-distributive effect.

So what is the point of them existing? Are they more efficient than other forms of taxes?
