Custom made wedding dress?

Has anyone had a wedding dress made by a seamstress or a dressmaker? I've read that you can often take pictures to an expert seamstress of a very expensive dress and get it made for much cheaper. I've seen most of these articles written about seamstress in NYC but I am moving to Boston soon and I feel like there may be similar dressmakers in such a large city. Has anyone had experience with this?
