Benefits to using a display port adapter?

As I understand it display port is faster than hdmi, yes? I have a wide screen monitor connected to my 960 via a hdmi cable. My monitor only has hdmi ports but my card had 3 display ports. Would there be any benefit to using a display port to hdmi cable, or would any sort of increase in performance bottleneck at the hdmi end. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I couldn't find any information on this particular instance.
