Mercenary Starting Scimitars

Hello, I am a newbie to Dark Souls games, so I spent my first titanite shards on upgrading the default sword(s) for the mercenary class (dual scimitars). Is it worth it to continue to upgrade? I just got a broadsword and the stats are way better, I would appreciate any advice as to which weapon is better.
