Cant use any items?

I'm trying to help out my friend in the Cathedral by putting down my signs, but any location there that isn't near the covenant area greys out all of my online and transportation items. I cant use a homeward bone, any of my soapstones, or my red eye orb. I was summoned and got summoned just fine when I personally ran through the area so I'm not sure what's going on.
