Well why can't you transfer me?!
So a brief backstory about myself. I work for a very large credit card company. Part of my job is to answer phones and provide people with a status update on their credit card application. Some days I will do this for 5-6 hours, other days my day is spent underwriting the applications themselves. Today, I did 99% underwriting, and took 2 phone calls. Just so happened, it was the most ridiculous call I've taken in a while.
For the sake of formatting, I will be ME, and the customer will be C.
Ring ring
Me: insert bank name credit card underwriting, how can I help you?
C: Yes, I'd like to check on the status of my application, I have a reference # for you.
Me: OK sure, what is that #?
He proceeds to read me a # that is not one of our reference #'s, nor does it follow our reference # patterns.
Me: I'm sorry, but that is not one of our reference #'s.... can I perhaps get some other info so I can locate this application?
He then gave me some more info, and again, I was unable to find his application.
Me: I'm sorry sir, but I'm not able to find your application in our system. What credit card was it that you applied for?
C: (names off a card type that is one of our competitor's banks cards, so by this point, it's obvious he's called the wrong number)
Me: I'm sorry sir, but I believe you may have the wrong number, we are not Bank B, we are Bank A.
C: Well what f'in number am I supposed to call then?
Me: I'm sorry sir, but I do not have access to their number. I suggest looking it up on the internet
C: That's what I did! And when I typed in "Mastercard credit cards", your number came up!
At this point, it's obvious that he's not very bright. We are not Mastercard. We do have Mastercard logos on some of our cards, but Mastercard is a completely separate company. I'm dumbfounded how he managed to get our number.
Me: Sir, I'm sorry, but again, I believe you have the wrong number.
C: Well can't you just transfer me to them?!?
Me: No, I'm sorry, I cannot.
C: Well that's bullsh*t! This is terrible customer service, I can't believe that you won't even try to help one of your customers. This is ridiculous. Hangs up
I had to take a minute to collect my thoughts after that one. Not because I'm not used to people yelling at me (though it is rather rare), but because this guy was just that dense.
After he hung up, I wish that I had the opportunity to respond to his comment about being a customer, as I would have probably said "but sir, you are not our customer".
