Should I go ahead and get a new (used) car or keep my old one?

Auto

Hi everyone! First off, I am a full time college student and I do not work however, I have a hobby that I make about $500 - $600 a month on.

At the moment, I have a 12 year old salvage car that is pretty much a money pit. I am looking into trading my car in to get another car that is around $6,000 - $7,000.

I have a credit card that I pay off every month and I have a little bit of savings.

At the moment, I live at home rent free. All I have to pay for are things I want/need and car insurance. Within 6 months to a year, my boyfriend and I will be moving out into our own place. Again, I won't have to pay for much but my car insurance, car payment, and gas. When we move out, I will have to drive at least 45 mins to get to school everyday. This is the main reason I am looking into getting a better car.

Besides my savings, I have put off to the side $1,000 to go towards monthly car notes. In September, I will get close to $3,000 from financial aid refunds and I was planning on using some of that to help pay off the car. I'd prefer to pay more than my monthly payment to get the car paid off quicker.

So my question is, should I go ahead and trade in my car or keep it until I graduate from college in two years?
