Was it a good move getting a job to better my people skills?

I'm 15 and I recently got a job as a cashier, my main reason (besides $$$) was for the sake of self improvement and getting out my comfort zone every weekend. I've read so much advice that putting yourself out there is the way to go, and I thought the money aspect of a customer service job would be a good motivation.

Was I right or is this a terrible idea?
