Is there anyway to tell if you absolutely cannot do multiplayer in an area?

Coming from bloodborne, it was so easy with the bells. But here, I just gotta....waste my time with a friend until I don't see there soap after a while?

I ask because I know you can't summon after beating a boss, but some areas have multiple bosses.
