Need advise on an old Laptop

Hey everyone, I have a ~6 year old laptop that I like to take with me on the road for work, however very little work is actually done on it. So i was just wondering if there was anythign i could do to improve its performance. Currently I use a USB Belkin cooler, but my laptop still heats up to ridicoulous heats and will sometimes shut off on account of it. I believe the battery in it is shot because I cannot leave it unplugged for more then an hour. Im not terribly concerned about that unless its whats causing the problem. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Bought a USB cooler and i have all my games set to the lowest setting.

The only games I plan to play on it are LoL, Hearthstone and Runescape (yes I know I'm gay). If i coudl run these games without problem that would be great.
