Is it okay to be antisocial for the first few days?

Pretty much the title. I haven't played very long so far, about halfway through the first summer, but already I'm thinking about starting again and doing things a little differently.

When I started, I'd already watched a couple of episodes of a Lets Play, so I knew the first quest was to introduce yourself to the townsfolk and so I did - I spent about 70% of the day and early evening dashing about the place saying hi to everyone (I made a list and checked off names as I found them). It was fine, but I don't know if I want to do that again unless there's a detriment to it.

Does the quest stay there until you complete it, days later?
Does anyone get upset that I haven't greeted them since I arrived in the Valley?
What happens if I just spend the first few days on my farm, well, farming?
