I am at my wits end. I have literally spend days on this problem. Can anybody help me figure out why ssh requests to a server are dropped from what appears to be one subnet, and VPN connections to my server don't allow outgoing traffic?
I've got a personal server running Ubuntu 14.04. For some reason, ssh requests from my computer and others on my network, including a virtual machine running on my computer, and several OS X machines, cannot SSH into my server.
When I attempt to SSH, I get the following message: "Connection reset by [insert server's ip address here] port 22". I can only access my server now by SSHing into a different machine and then SSHing into the server.
My server has fail2ban and ufw installed on it, but my iptables output seems pretty empty. /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny are both empty.
Output of ufw status seems fine, but maybe it isn't.
I can connect to my server's VPN, but can only access local sites on it. DNS requests seem to never resolve. (Though perhaps that isn't true and I'm just dumb - I tried manually setting the DNS settings for the vpn client and it didn't resolve the issue).
Web traffic to the server works just fine.
Somebody please help me out. I am quickly losing my sanity.
EDIT 1:
I removed ufw and cleared my iptables to the default (accept everything) and this did not help.
EDIT 2:
Apparently, my VPN troubles came about as a result of trying to fix my ssh issues. When I tried to purge UFW and reinstall it, thinking that my SSH issues were because I had made an error somewhere, I forgot to change a line in /etc/ufw/before.rules for my VPN that mentioned my network device to reference systemd's autogenerated network device name.
I'm now leaning towards believing that the SSH issue is not my fault, but a change in the network policies of the college network I'm on. I think they might be blocking outbound ssh traffic. I didn't think SSH might be banned because I've been SSHing into another machine on campus (on a different subnet) to then SSH from to access my server.
Thanks for your help. Will take my laptop to a starbucks or something and see if the problem persists.
