How to deal with poking under nail

Does anyone else enjoy poking things (edges of paper/cards, sharp things, edges of fabric, etc.) under their nails? I finally just found out that I wasn't the only one who has this nasty habit, but I wanted to know if anyone else is dealing with this here, and if they have any advice on how they are overcoming it.

I've been doing this since I was little, and it especially gets difficult when the urge gets too strong and I end up separating the nail from the nail bed (usually on one side of the nail) so much that the tip (white part) of the nail plate gets mishsaped horribly...
