Should I rush? or no?
Okay so I'm very conflicted on wether or not to join a sorority and I always like asking reddit for help!
This fall I will be a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. I know this school is pretty big on Greek life, which poses some pros and cons
Pros: I've heard the networking and connections you make alone are worth it. But I'm taking a pre-med route and I'm not sure if there a lot of connections in the medical field. (I'm asking because usually I only hear of business or engineering networking, stuff like that) I like being feeling like a part of a group, and all of the events and social things look like so much fun! Plus, because UT is so big, I've heard it makes it a little smaller. My boyfriend is a year older than me and he's in a frat, and he seems to like it a lot. BUT he is going to a different school, and I would like to visit him pretty regularly and I'm worried if I'm out of town once a month it'll make greek life not worth it. (maybe??? idk??) Also, I feel almost obligated to join one because I feel like I would feel left out of I didn't. I've heard Greek life kind of consumes Austin sometimes and I'm very much a person that likes to be included.
Cons: Because Greek life at this school is so big, the cost of a sorority is pretty high. $2000-$5000 a year according to my research. Money isn't a huge problem for my family, but I want to make sure spending this money is worth it because I'm also planning on going to grad school. Neither of my parents went greek, so this is all very new to me and Im afraid my inexperience will keep me from getting a bid. Also, my #1 priority is school. I'm in a program that requires me to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA. Now I've heard different things. That 1, the sorority will take over my life and negatively effect my grades, or 2, the study times and minimum GPA required by the sorority will boost grades. And finally, I hate to admit it, but I'm kind of a sensitive person and I hate how some things just seem like a huge popularity contest. Like who can be the loudest/prettiest/srattiest whatever. And I've heard that not all sororities are like this and some are actually really down to earth but who knows. Just something I thought I'd include.
I might add to this if I forget anything, and I'm sorry if it was really scattered and disorganized. I would really appreciate any feedback y'all might have, thank you in advance!
