Cannot co op

So, my brother and I keep trying to co op. Using password and it works maybe, 1 out of every 50 tries. Does ANYONE know what is going on here? I just keep dropping my summon sign after about 15 seconds. He runs around, goes to firelink, comes back. After maybe a half hour of trying he will finally see me. This can't be right!
