I have two canvases aching for some paint. What's the best way to use them with watercolor?

I started painting with watercolors for about a year now, but I've only used them on pretty decent quality watercolor sketchbook paper. In the past I've painted a little with acrylic paint, so I know that using some kind of primer or gesso is sometimes needed. Is this true for using canvases for watercolor?
