Individual in British Columbia trying to decide what trade to get into
Hello everyone,
I am trying to decide on a trade, currently live on Vancouver Island, and am willing to move within BC. What I would like to do is something that pays decent (around 40K), has good job security, and can allow someone to have a family life outside of work. I realize that I will be starting at the bottom working long hours regardless of what trade I pick. I am stuck in analysis paralysis right now and wish I could just make a decision haha
Here is a little information about my background:
- I finished a B.Com years ago but decided that hands-on work is what I really want to do.
- Work experience in customer service and security work.
- Spent 6 yrs in the Navy as a electro-mechanical technician. I did planned and corrective maintenance on electronics. I also had a special duty where I operated and monitored generators, chillers, electrical switchgear, fire/flood alarms, etc.
What I am interested in doing and have work experience in:
- Fine tuning things and maintaining precise tolerances
- Analysing symptoms and troubleshooting
- Electrical with a bit of mechanical work thrown in
- Operating machinery
Some trades that I have come up with are:
- Power engineer for commercial buildings (aka building operator - so 4th or 5th class ticket)
- Electrician (some have suggested doing a dual ticket electrician/instrumentation)
- Security Systems Technician
- HVAC Technician
Which one of these trades would I be better off doing in the long run? Are there any other trades that I should consider?
Thanks a lot folks! :) James
