Job related expenses deduction question

Can someone please help me with the following federal income tax return scenario?

  • I bought a RV trailer Nov 2015 for about $85k (RV trailer loan from bank).
  • I’m employed as a w2 employee for a company that I do not have any equity in (they are located in Indiana) and I work remote from Texas.
  • My plan was to use the RV Trailer for work to travel to all company/industry related trade shows (instead of flying and staying in hotels) and product field testing while being able to take my family with me.
  • I didn’t use the RV trailer until February of 2016 (it sat in storage from NOV to FEB).
  • My employer did not help me pay for the RV trailer but they do reimburse for gas, miles and expenses if I use it for work.

Questions:

  • Is it safe for me to claim the $85k RV trailer as a job expense that my employer did not cover for my 2015 tax return?

    • Or am I asking to be audited into oblivion?
    • If it’s ok, should I take all the deprecation in 2015 or spread it out?
      • I may sell the RV trailer in 2016
  • Claiming the RV trailer under the job related expenses section under assets in turbo tax would adjust my return to get back $3,000, without claiming it I will owe $1,800

  • The safe option may be to not mess with the out of pocket job related expenses and to just claim the sales tax paid for the RV trailer and the interest

    • I claim the RV trailer loan as a 2nd home on my returns (I read the IRS allows for RV trailers to be claimed as second home if they have bedrooms and bathrooms, which the RV trailer has).
