Jarran Reed and the Ceiling-Floor Dilemma
A guy I've seen projected to GB a lot in mock drafts is Jarran Reed. I understand why he's a popular selection - we're weak on the defensive line and Reed is a polished player from a high-caliber program who will likely make a transition to the league with ease. He's the consensus best run-stopper in the class and will clog up running lanes at the next level.
But the draft intelligentsia who have praised Reed as unmovable against the run are equally confident that he will never be a legitimate threat against the pass, the sort of player you take off the field on third downs.
Particularly in a draft class that's being lauded as extremely deep on the D-line, do you think it's worth spending a first-round pick, even a late one, on a one-dimensional player? Is Reed's one trick that good? I find it difficult to believe that he's so much better than second-day prospects like Austin Johnson and Javon Hargrave that it would be worth picking him over a quality offensive lineman like Jason Spriggs or an edge rusher like Noah Spence, should he fall.
