Logitech G900 Chaos Spectrum initial impressions

My long awaited G900 finally arrived yesterday, and here are the initial impressions after one day of use:

What I liked:

  • It's light, amazingly light. It's like G402, only wireless. Making a wireless mouse this light is truly an outstanding achievement on Logitech's part.

  • Even though it's a larger ambidextrous mouse, it's actually quite comfortable holding. So far the only thing that stood out is that the right edge where the ring finger rests protrudes out quite a bit compared to the G502, but I can live with that.

  • All buttons save for MMB have micro-switches. The side buttons and disabling mechanism (cover) works reasonably well.

  • Even though significantly lightened up, the scroll wheel is still smooth, and can keep free scrolling forever.

  • The primary mouse buttons are snappy and responsive. I actually think it subjectively feels better than both the G502 and G402.

  • PWM3366, which means that it behave exactly like my G502. It's a great sensor, and not having to fiddle around with settings is a bonus.

  • The charging cable also works as an extender cable for the receiver. This effectively brings the receiver right before the mouse, and minimizes the possibility of interference.

  • There is no discernible difference between using the G900 compared to a wired (G502) mouse. Response is snappy and accurate both in tracking and clicking.

What I'm not so sure of:

  • Both primary buttons are slightly loose, and does indeed slide slightly from side to side (about 1mm or so at the very far tip). It does not affect operations, but just a bit of sloppiness that you don't expect from Logitech.

  • The two little buttons on the top are a bit on the small side. It's not in a easy to operate location to begin with, and almost impossible to accurately hit in the heat of a game. They're really only for mouse functions and not to be assigned as keys.

  • While there are mouse buttons on both sides of the mouse, the ring finger crosses on top of the forward right button (as a righty), and coupled with the slight bulge outwards as mentioned earlier, means that it is far too easy to accidentally press. I just left my right side buttons covered, but that would mean effectively losing two of the advertised buttons.

  • There are many large cracks and crevices throughout the center and sides of the mouse, and even after just one day I can already see dust gathering in them. Particularly worrying is the gap between the forward side buttons and the base of the primary buttons. It's not hard to imagine grime from the thumb accumulating in there. But that's just a guess at this point, perhaps it's just me being paranoid.

  • The MMB, which uses tactile switches, is the only real weak point IMO. For a button so commonly used, it is a very heavy button, and just requires a lot of effort to press (same complaint goes to the G502). The side-scroll buttons, OTOH, are a bit weak in tactile response, but since those are very rarely used, I don't care as much.

  • Apart from the primary lighting settings page, there is yet another set of lighting presets in the battery menu that overrides the settings on the other page. Why make it so complicated?

  • There is no simple way to turn the lights on or off by the mouse itself, which is a problem when taking the mouse somewhere without LGS. The only way I can think of is to make two duplicate copies of the same profile, differing only by the light being on or off, and switch using the profile switch button on the bottom. But I'd really prefer this not take up a profile slot.

With all that said, these are really minor complaints. The G900 had met or exceeded every one of my expectations. It's a tad on the expensive side, but absolutely no regrets here -- I'll be using this as my primary mouse for years to come.
