ELI5:Why do Americans complain endlessly about college debt and tuition when in-state schools are relatively affordable?

It seems like alot of Americans here always go on about how envious they are about university fees in other countries like the U.K, Canada and Australia but isn't U.S in-state tuition comparable? Why are so many Americans in college debt?
