Would we do the NFL trade to trade down?

So earlier in the day, the Cleveland Browns made this trade to the Eagles. Do you guys think if the leafs win the 2nd or 3rd lottery we should make a similar trade?

Eagles Receive 2016 2nd overall pick 2017 4th Round Pick

Browns Receive 2016 8th overall pick 2016 77th overall pick 2016 100th overall pick 2017 1st Round Pick 2018 2nd Round Pick

Essentially Laine or Pool Party and a 2017 4th for 8th plus a 3rd, 4th, 2017 1st and 2017 2nd.

No trading down if top 3.

Laine Matthews puljvarri too valuable.

Agreed. All 3 have franchise potential.

I agree also. In the NFL, these top picks are more valuable to some teams than others, essentially based on the weighted value of the QB. In the NHL, every single team would want Matthews or Laine or Pool Party. Where as in the example we saw in the NFL, Goff and Wentz (two young potential star QBs) could drastically alter the shape of a team in need of a QB, but a team like Tennessee (or to a lesser degree, Cleveland with RGIII) who already has a star QB would have zero interest in that pick.

Cleveland with RGIII

Doesn't he play for the Redskins?

partybro69•

He was their backup this year so they traded him this offseason

Pretty loose definition of a star. They have a starting QB haha. There is a human at the position who might continue to be at the position going forward.

I think they consider it. What if Leafs recieve first overall pick, ARI drafts 7th. Leafs trade 1st overall to ARI for Domi plus their first. I think that's a win for the Leafs cause you can draft like Juolevi or some other D, and you get a proven player to play on Stamkos' wing.

1
dells16•

i'd feel more safe with matthews tbh, Stamkos isn't a guarentee at this point, and he will be pricey. With matthews we might be able to pay off kessels retenation ?!

1
UPSET_GEORGE•

I'm just saying it's possible. I don't think it's a guarantee we keep our pick, even if it's first overall.

1
dells16•

I'd be surprised if we traded down, if we did whos the #1C? The pick we just traded? I only see it happening if shanny knows stammer is a lock.

1
Apexk9•

Top 3 are much better then domi. Plus they are more surefire locks and d's develop slow and weird we can snipe a d with an offer sheet (plus with zAistev top 4 is set) or hit a Ufa.

Matthew Laine and puljvaari are too valuable to trade.

1
UPSET_GEORGE•

Assuming an offer sheet isn't matched is much more far fetched.

1
Apexk9•

Some teams have a internal budget and they can't over spend.

The way a team drafts and the value of picks is not really comparable between the leagues. I think it is not realistic to compare the NFL trades to the NHL draft.

leafsbroncos18•

Part of what made both trades so good for the teams moving down is there are no consensus top players like in the NHL that would warrant moving up to get. Rams are dumb Eagles are dumb in this specific case, but if there was an NFL equivalent of Matthews and Laine sitting there it would be a different story, and trading down might not be smart.

Plus we are very quickly accumulating quantity in our system, it would be very dumb to trade away what could end up being our best player in a few years when we can accumulate picks other ways. If we're talking 4th pick though, yes. A hundred times yes this would be perfect.

SefferOP•

thanks for the insight. I didn't know the NFL draft worked this way. I'm getting information that the variety of positions on the NFL roster makes the mid first draft picks much more valuable.

3
MasochisticLeafsFan•

NFL draft picks are far more valuable than NHL picks.

4
blaiseisgood•

In what way?

EDIT: So in the NFL quantity is more important, is what I'm gathering.

1
sitonthyface69•

I'm by no means an NFL expert but they might have a larger pool to pick from making their 2nd/3rd/ect more valuable. Also the only way straight to the NFL is by draft or professional try outs but really the only guys who make it are through the draft... In NHL you can sign guys out of Russia/Europe/college. In NHL the teams give up a 1st round pick for decent rentals. To put it in perspective I think lions were looking to trade Calvin (before last season) for a 2nd round pick but no team could justify giving up a 2nd for him even though he is an all star WR and still had time on his contract.

DoubleONine•

Cheaper, next to no guaranteed money, a lot more player turnover in the NFL and bigger rosters with more positions to fill. Plus rookies are usually 23 or so, and come in ready to be immediate contributors.

Where do the Eagles project to finish this year? That 2017 1^st could be valuable.

3
Tulkas_44•

Leafs/eagles fan living in Philly.

The eagles are the enigma of the NFL. They made a bunch of splashes with coach Chip Kelly, he had two good seasons then overhauled the team, which then collapsed last season, fired Chip, hired a new coach, and things were looking generally optimistic (the consensus was they had a great off season) then this trade happens today and now everyone is panicking again. We are looking like we're going to have three quarterbacks with some potential to start the season but they won't commit to one, and there's some clear confusion about the direction of the team, despite some promising young players (as well as a bust or two, depending on who you ask). The division is weak as well, so where are the eagles projected?

Who the fuck knows

5
SefferOP•

bot 5 probably. But I'm not a big NFL guy so I'm not too sure. This trade just kinda piqued my interest.

3
BettmanReturns•

I think that's worth it. 2^nd/3^rd ovr + 4^th rounder --> 8^th ovr + Top 5 + 35^th ish ovr + 77^th + 100^th.

Sucks to wait another year, but we could end up with 2 blue chippers instead of one.

2
ridingmissdaisy•

As a Cowboys fan, hopefully 32nd

2
thedrunkentendy•

They aren't great but they changed coaches and could be a bubble team since aside from last season they were for the previous 6 seasons.

1
Marino19•

The key thing here is that the teams traded up for potential franchise QBs which is the highest valued position in North American sports. No position in hockey is as valuable as a QB in the NFL so any hypothetical deals are unrealistic to compare.

3
sharkbabysitter•

all day long.

1
zomglookup•

If this happens in the NHL, the team that traded up gets fleeced... Laine or Pulj for two 1^st rounders, a 2^nd, and a 3^rd (the two 4^th rounders essentially cancel each other out)

1
Tulkas_44•

For the record, the overwhelming consensus here in Philly is that this is a terrible trade for the iggles.

1
baldcats•

This Browns trade is similar to the CBJ trade we saw the behind the scenes video of. Acquire as many picks as possible... And not being in a position to pick and choose by position. Browns are just starting their rebuild and if anyone is looking for an NFL team to follow... Cleveland is rebuilding the right way this time. But I think the leafs are further ahead in their rebuild and should try and get the best prospect they can. No need to trade down... Maybe with the pens pick though..

1
SefferOP•

Hmm browns. Years of suffering? I could provably manage that pain. Maybe the titans? Man i must be a masochist.

1
Aintboutdatlyfe•

Draft Picks are way more valuable in the NFL than NHL. Especially late picks

We'd need more coming our way for it to be equivalent to those trades

1
Swa9Dra9on•

Depends on who we're trading with. If that 2017 first isn't lottery protected and we're getting it from a bad team, why not? Two top ten picks for the 2nd or 3rd, sounds good to me.

1
DoubleONine•

2 seconds instead of the third and fourth and abso-fucking-lutley I do.

1
SpatulaTarte•

Never. We're starting to have a lot of depth in our prospect pool. We need the high end talent. 8th overall is still high, but let's compare 2nd/3rd overall to 7th/8th overall picks.

2nd/3rd overall: Eichel/Strome, Reinhart/Draisaitl, Barkov/Drouin, Murray/Galchenyuk, Landeskog/Huberdeau, Seguin/Gudbranson, Hedman/Duchene

7th/8th overall: Provorov/Werenski, Fleury/Nylander, Nurse/RistolainenDumba/Pouliot, Scheifele/Couturier, Skinner/Burmistrov, Kadri/Glennie

There are some real gems in the 7th/8th spot, but in general, I'm taking the higher pick. The trade is only worth it if next year it's a lottery pick. In that case, I keep the pick that we have and not the mystery box.

Perm_Coupon•

No! Fuck NO! I'm still pissed that management even considered trading down last year, this Marner kid looks pretty fucking good...

1
nourez•

I thought the condition on trading down was that Marner was taken 3rd?

As a Leafs and Eagles fan, first of all, I hate you for reminding me of this.

Secondly, no. Hockey is a different sport entirely. Lower round picks in the NFL have more value than picks in the NHL. The NFL is more diverse in the talent within the draft at different positions, so you get more talent later on. 2nd round picks seldom become good NHL players, but in the NFL, it's almost expected that a 2nd round pick becomes an impact player.

100% I would quantity over quality

sh1tbr1cks•

Yes we would trade down if we don't win Matthews. It's Matthews or Nylander and picks that make us winners in this draft.1

-2
nourez•

Do you seriously think Alex Nylander is a better pick than Laine, Puljujarvi or PLD?

1
sh1tbr1cks•

Yes and we get picks as well by trading down which is bonus value.
