To Slander Flander's
I've recently taken up work at the Royal Canadian Legion. Everywhere I look, they have Flander's Field plastered on the walls, and looking at today's society, when placed against that stark picture of a world that was much simpler; a world where enemies were known and men were brave and fought them, shows stark contrast to the world of today, where everything is enshrouded in lies, and our enemies hide behind ivory towers, kept locked away from view. This poem is meant to be the embodiment of the failure we as a society have endeavored upon in forgetting the sacrifices of the brave for our freedoms, and a criticism of the cowardice of the people of today, unwilling to stand up for the rights that are being stripped away from them.
The Flanders poppies sit and rot;
A memory of a time forgot...
Their petals broken, scattered; Fie
On broken faith with those who died,
Cared for by none who ought.
Unknowing of the price begot,
And heedless to what we have wrought;
Betray'd the love of those who lie in Flanders field.
And now in times of terror high,
We sit and cower, gripped by lies
From foes whose names found strike and blot,
While 'neath the mottled poppy plots
There ends a sleepless night in Flander's field.
