[Discuss] What keeps you playing?

Discussion

Hey there, I'm a relatively new teitoku that has been playing this on and off for a while now (like, a couple of logins per week). I really like most of the systems and the way kancolle looks, however I have one major problem - lack of goal. I'm the type of guy that can't get pumped for a game unless there's some sort of specific goal I can aim for (like competitive pvp, beating the story, difficult co-op pve, etc). Unfortunately I can find neither of those in kancolle (just aiming to build the dream waifu team isn't exciting for me if I have nothing interesting to use it for).

So in my desperate attempts to find something that can help me get hyped and truly invested in the game (or the opposite - finally quit it for good) I'd like to hear about your aspirations and goals. What drives you to play this and why? Is it just about the waifu collecting? Is there nothing for me to actually do with my ships other than grinding for levels and newer waifus?

PS: Keep in mind that I'm still a low level player, therefore wouldn't know if things are any different at higher levels.

[Found this here on r/kancolle, and it sums it up pretty nicely](http://i.imgur.com/yVk37VH.jpg)

I like being able to play a game based on solid calculations (and some RNG), while also not feeling the pressures of PvP. ^(also waifus)

Agree. Atago is my waifu (or at least she will be when I get high enough level to marry her).

I'm still waiting in WOWs for Shinano!

He's a staple in r/WorldOfWarships for that reason, tho...XD

Well he also tried Steel Ocean too. No clue how that went tho.

And yes I know. Seen Dai there more than a few times.

Ragequitted because the game is really glitchy.

GOTTA GET MORE

Yep. If you are goal-oriented and like a challenge, then hard mode events are what you are looking for. The perfect test for the dream team you put together!

3
deamonkillerOP•

Hmm, how often are those events usually? Will they prove a difficult challenge even if your team is full of max level ships (that's a question coming from a dark souls/etrian odyssey player)? Most Japanese games have good reputation for event variety and consistency so I actually have high hopes for that. Could potentially be the reason I start playing seriously.

1
RailGun256•

usually once per season (so 4 times a year). next one is just under a week away and as for difficulty lets just say the last event on the scale of this upcoming one proved challenging for even the most seasoned veteran players.

3
deamonkillerOP•

That's awesome news actually! It means I have super difficult fights to look forward to (as opposed to just aiming for some medals/achievements in order to artificially increase difficulty).

I keep playing because of events and the shipgirls themselves. Time between events is basically training time for my ships. There's almost always some Kai Ni to get, map to clear, or something else to do. It's kind of like running on a treadmill made of salt. There's short term, medium term, and long term goals that keep me coming back.

8
Lonaticus•

Pretty much this.

Though I understand where OP comes from. I also felt bored and frustrated a few weeks in (world 4 maps, PTSD Imps during autumn event, hq 40-60) and quit playing for a month. The grind inbetween lvl 20 and kai2 and before you get your first trophy DD, or successful LSC can be pretty boring.

The "early to mid game" can seem pretty boring and lacking in objectives.

Chyafu•

I haven't been playing for a long time, but the things that keep me logging on are my secretry ship and grinding for new furniture

Getting Kashima and marry her.

How do you even get kashima? Is she just an rare event drop or a event reward?

Kashima was fall 2015 E3 reward, and is not currently available anywhere.

I started playing July of 2015 and will be coming up on the 1 year anniversary of playing this game soon enough. While i will say there isn't a clear defined purpose of kancolle thats what makes kancolle great. You are free to conduct your game anyway you want. "want to only focus on waifus go ahead" "only keep those who's stats deem them worthy? do it" "dont know what u want to do and just do it all randomly awe yis"

I fall in between a balance of the above mentioned playstyles. Ive kept destroyers because they're cool/different' looking and ive also ejected many a ship for a while in favor of better statted ships in the same class until ive gotten slots. (as ive added more slots that ships acquired ive lessened in caring about stats and just gone the pokemon route of catching them all.) but now im just leveling up everyone geting more equipment and preparing for events with the goal of clearing spring and summer on hard for my 1st time experiencing one.

5
Dizzyworld2•

Simple.

Collecting all shipgirls. (trophy ships missing are Hatsukaze and Sakawa)

Obtain all K2s and blueprint all girls (~5 DDs left + Ooshio to BP)

Events, aim for a full hard clear and get that First Class Medal (2 so far)

Daily equipment modernization. Several farms are necessary to *Max or have enough top tier equipments.

5
low_priest•

Gotta catch em all!

2
Shadow_Claw•

Goals. Specifically, collection. Also events and a certain community.

3
ImAPairOfCleats•

I sank 60 dollars into getting 30 ships slots and 2 repair docks. I'm getting my money's worth.

3
NinerT•

Getting all the waifus

2
Lui97•

Personally, I'm a fan of the IJN, keeping them sortied is good enough for me.

2
Zeen172•

Going for the hard clear in events. It gives a reason to grind all your ships.

2
GavriloSerb•

Really, I don't know. I strongly dislike RnG, but I guess just because it's KanColle. I love the KanColle franchise, and really, if the game was any other franchise, I don't know if I'd play it.

2
Mega_Toast•

Events. Catching em all. Waifu.

1
issm•

There's ranking if you want to get competitive.

1
SomewhatMystia•

Furniture (and the fact that I have a second monitor helps, too).

1
Rithral•

Ranking or waifu leveling. Not much more to do than that in between events.
