MARCON! May 6, 7, 8! Hyatt Regency/Columbus Convention Center

It's Marcon weekend!

Marcon is the annual Sci-Fi / Fantasy / Etc. Convention in Columbus at the Hyatt Regency/Convention Center this weekend, May 6, 7, and 8!

What is Marcon? It's a mid-range independent convention run solely by volunteers as a non-profit endeavour for Solae. It's not owned by Wizard World, it's not a celebrity convention, it's not a anime-focused con, it's not a gaming convention, the idea is that it's a convention for everyone! There are multitudes of panels, including talks on Superheroes, Star Wars, and every flavor of fandom. There are two shadowcasts of Dr. Horrible, one on both Friday and Saturday during the Costume Contest, a Buffy shadowcast, and the annual Rocky Horror one early Friday evening. There is music, a full gaming lineup, a consuite, and plenty of parties overnight.

Who is coming to Marcon? As said it's not a celebrity convention, however Kris Holden-Reid from Lost Girl will be there, as well as music, artists, and author guests of honor. There is a full dealers room, an Art Show, and several fan groups. Deadpool from Tea Time with Deadpool will be attending as well.

Where is Marcon? Columbus Convention Center/Hyatt Regency. At the door it's $60 for the weekend, but there are also single day memberships available.

How can I get in cheaper? You can volunteer! As said Marcon is the largest completely fan run convention in Columbus, and we need your help! For 12 hours worked throughout the weekend, you get your membership reimbursed or get in free next year!

Why? Because it's a fun time, and because it's something unique in the fandom communities. It's not run by large corporations, and it isn't just one section of fandom. Marcon has been happening for 51 years now, and it continues to be a great time, and personally the highlight of the year. It's a time to make new friends and new memories, and be a part of something special.

So come on down to Marcon! http://www.marcon.org

And when you need to recharge, the Barfleet con suite will be there with all the alcohol you could need!

You can also count on Marcon to be a cesspool of self-importance, half-ass planning, bad food, and more than one game of 'Guess the STD' going on. It used to be good back in the day, but has dropped to sub-mediocrity faster than you can say, "roofie for the lady".

"Guess the STD"? Perhaps you might have been doing the wrong things at a Sci-Fi convention? Cause that's not exactly in the programming. "Bad food"? The consuite has snacks and cookies and stuff, but if you're getting full meals you're not getting them from the convention.

Again, it's completely volunteer-run, and the largest volunteer run con around. It has logistical issues, and that's why I put in the bit about volunteers. I know it's cool to just bitch about something vaguely and not do anything to fix the actual problems, but instead of random complaints that aren't respective of anything at all, maybe volunteer, then show up to run or work a department.
