Base Perry Review

Other

Hey guys haven't done one of these in a while, I've been making adjustments to my team recently, so I've been trying out new players, seeing what works. My current roster is performing really well so I've decided to type up more reviews, I enjoy writing them, I hope they're helpful anyways here you go boys.

Line: Perry-Datsyuk-Malkin

Skating 7/10 There is no way to sugarcoat it, Perry is a slow card, coming in at an 83 speed and acceleration with his base warrants a captaincy card to be placed on him immediately, he isn't ideal for back checking or keeping up on the rush with speedy players. Where he does perform well is his agility and balance. He is able to take a hit and more often than not shrug it off, even from the huge pillar defensemen like Hedman and Byfuglien. Unless he gets absolutely lined up, he won't get destroyed. His agility in zone allows him to cut around pretty well, for a big man he has good maneuverability.

Shooting 9.5/10 I believe that when used well, Perry's shot is nearly automatic. If you have him setup anywhere in between the dots and below the tops of the circles, he will hit his spot with a hard shot. Perry's slapshot his just as useful as his wristshot, I find that he has no weaknesses in either. What I find to be his most underrated component is his ability to find open space and position himself for one-timers. I've noticed more recently, as I started paying more attention to it, Perry just finds open ice to bury a one-timer. He opens himself up for a cross crease just as often as he backs up and maneuvers when someone is setting up behind the net, he is truly an in-zone offense player.

Hands 8.5/10 I find Perry's hands to be pretty good, especially for a big man. He won't thread passes the way Datsyuk or Kaner will, but that is not what you're buying him for. He's reliable in terms of passing, no more, no less, you know what you are getting. Perry can execute dekes pretty well to separate himself from the defense, but I sometimes find him to be slow in terms of this. He does not really lose the puck outright though, due to his good puck control and big body.

Checking 9/10 Perry is a great physical player, if he lines up a hit, he will wreck the opponent, he can force turnovers on the forecheck because of this. As stated earlier, he takes contact well too, he won't get obliterated by the opponent, maybe if he gets lined up by a big body player, but that might be the only situation.

Defense 7.5/10 I was pleasantly surprised with Perry's defensive game. Not much is expected as a sniping winger on defense, but I found him to be in position more often than not to cover his point. His stick checking was also above where I thought it would be, he wasn't bad at forcing turnovers with timely pokes or stick lifts. What I did notice with his defensive game negatively, his low speed doesn't allow him to backcheck particularly well, and also, his low discipline caused him to take some penalties when trying to stick check.

Overall... As a disclaimer, I did not like Perry my first go around with him, but I think most of that is because I did not know how to use him. With Perry, you need to understand that he is an in-zone type of player, he will setup where you need him to be in the slot for a one-timer, he will work in the corners to retrieve the puck, he can make simple passes to setup players. What he will not do is take the puck up by himself, he does not have the speed. Where the success starts with is his line mates, having him with two guys with speed and playmaking ability is key to making him go, as they can get the puck in the zone and then feed him when he is open. Having some strength with these players to cycle helps as well. This is not to say that he can't score on a rush, he just tends to be behind the play these type of chances occur, but if he's there, he will bury the puck nonetheless. I think that Perry is a gem of a player, he has a lower price than I believe he should due to his lack of speed and people being put off by that, but don't let that discourage you from at least trying him out, he puts up a lot of goals when utilized correctly.
