I got caught

I got caught shoplifting at a Shoprite. They made me sign some papers and made a photocopy of my ID. They also told/return the loot that I took from the Riteaid next door. Shoprite LP told me not to go back to any shoprite.

How fucked am I? Should I stay away from all Riteaids as well. How long until they forget about me and what I look like?

So basically this is what this Sub has become. A bunch of people who either get caught or think they will get caught and ask how much trouble they will be in.

If you can't deal with the repercussions then don;t get in the game

Fuck off. I didn't ask for your opinion on the subreddit nor for a lecture.

Either stop being such a pussy or stop shoplifting.

They circulated your info to all the Shoprite and Riteaid stores in the area. Stay away from those stores or else they may hit you with trespassing or worse and depending on the amount you lifted you could also forget about paying for any civil demand letter. Those are extortion shit papers that mean nothing.

Stop shoplifting.

How large (in miles) is the radius of "in the area?" How long do I avoid these stores for? I told the LP that I'm "in between houses" and I had paperwork for housing assistance on me so I doubt I'll get stuff mailed.

The whole district. Which may be he state depending on how they run things. You pretty much can't go to any of those ever. Your picture stays forever as well.

Well that sucks. Shoprite I can deal with but riteaid is a hard hit since riteaid has things I cant get else where.

That age old adage, don't shit where you eat, applies.

Expect a letter in the mail with a bill for $350 or so.

In between houses, address on ID is no longer my address and the house is getting sold.

That won't make it go away. Although, I'm not 100% sure you have to pay a civil demand if the cops weren't called.

I keep seeing people saying to ignore civil demand letters. The reality is, a portion of them are taken to court - the stores seem to pick and choose randomly who to make an example out of. They are legal - they recoup the costs associated with investigating and detaining you.

Instead of listening to advice here (in a sub with a high track record of people getting caught and dodgy advice), see if there's a pro-bono lawyer or legal aid program in your area and seek their advice.

Even if you aren't taken to court - there's a hidden effect - unpaid civil demands do affect your credit rating. You might'nt give a toss at the moment, but as you mature and wish to take out mortgages to buy a home, other loans such as a car, credit cards etc - it could come back to haunt you.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try to go back and talking to the LPA about "paying off" the stolen items by paying for them without actually buying them. At the very least it might put be in good standing and they might consider dropping the entire thing all together.

apologies and being willing to try and set things right never goes astray. Even if it goes to court, being seen as remorseful gives you a far better outcome. Hope things go well.

Yeah you're wrong.

It's not a a debt because you don't owe the store anything. Lawyers get calls about this shit every day and good lawyers will tell you that getting sued never happens.

Do some research before giving out shitty advice.

It does not affect your credit rating at all.

I've done plenty of research and I live with a lawyer, so yeah. Your advice all over this sub is generally shitty and I hate to think of how many people's lives are that much shittier for having listened to it.

I think his advice is great! The thieves he's giving the false shitty advice to are in the predicament they are in because they broke a law that's already pretty light on punishment. With his fake troll advice, he's basically ensuring they get punishment closer to the level they deserve, rather than the easy way out of just paying a fine. He's doing society a great favor!

I'll admit I didn't like him at first because he comes across as arrogant and dickish, but the dumb 12 year old shoplifters in this sub listen to the advice of someone like that more than the reasonable advice given here, so he's pretty much the perfect vigilante troll, whether he knows it or not. That's something I can get behind!

OP, if you see this, please ignore all civil demands and court orders. If you are told to go to court, avoid it. If you are told you are banned from a store, you'll be fine going back in, they can't do anything to you. Everything will magically go away, going to jail and having bad credit is a myth. There is no such thing as court or jail!

There are no such things as laws, and it's a free country..... can you imagine? I don't think some of these people can.

I mean I would probably stay away from other stores on your city for a while but enforcing bans outside of that the store you got caught at is pretty hard to do, really all it means if that if you get caught shoplifting at anther shoprite you risk getting an additional trespassing charge and maybe upgraded charges but you could probably still shop at other shoprite etc in your area.
