Untitled/Unrequited

 

In the night you sleep soundly

while my anxiety tick-tick-ticks

to the rhythm of your watch

Counting down the seconds left

until we're no longer together-

as if we ever were:

More than friends, less than lovers

Your body heat reminds me of where I am

My nostrils still imbued with your scent

of pheromones and cigarettes

I become shamefully aroused

when you're pressed up against me

still frustrated from the failed attempt

We vowed to sleep - another promise broken

as I realize: I've lost score

of who just couldn't perform more often

Despite this, the fatal "L" word

reproduces in my brain

Hijacking all processes until -

Is it 10 a.m. already?

You smile and curl up next to me

as I kiss your cheek and sigh

We dress to return to reality

as I can't help but want to cry

One more kiss and I'm out the door

and we're just friends forevermore
