Ryze tips for a noob?

So I know that ryze is very strong even prior to the mid year mages change, however I could never play him properly.

Can some experienced ryze players provide me with some tips to play him top/mid lane? I'm mainly confused about how the combo goes depending on how many stacks I have on my passive.
