Narcotics checkpoint on 35E.

Has anyone heard of this? I was driving on 35 through Lancaster and there were 6 cops standing there in the middle of the highway with sniffing dogs going from car to car. 2 state trooper vehicles and a blacked out suburban with DEA guys beside it. Traffic was all backed up as they let people through. Is this a normal thing that happens in Texas?
