Can someone give me a rundown of how to play GTA online?

I've always been about single player, but Gta online looks cool because of repeatable missions and whatnot...but I always log on and feel lost, how do I play a mission? Do I have to play with others or can I take up missions on my own? What do you usually do once you log on?
