Why am I the only person who trusts my rocket-scientist bishop to look at the evidence against the church?
I have an amazing Bishop - he is literally a rocket scientist. He runs a program for a huge government contractor figuring out how to make the military's rockets even better. He has advanced degrees, has been vetted to death, holds top secret clearances, is trusted with billion-dollar budgets and headcounts in the thousands. And of course, he speaks for God as a Judge in Israel.
And yet, I am apparently the only person that trusts him to look at the evidence against the church and make a reasonable conclusion. The church leadership doesn't trust him. He doesn't even trust himself. It is truly disturbing to watch him squirm when they come up.
You can bet that when confronted with difficult legal, medical, financial, political, and other problems, he has zero trouble hitting google and getting to the bottom line in no time. I bet if his trash collection bill suddenly jumped $50, he'd have it figured out in less than 5 minutes.
But here we have the religion that he has placed at the core of his life, radically rewriting their history and telling him to take the fall for their inconsistent and hateful policies, and he can't even be bothered to read the new essays?
How do you explain that?
Edit: I understand the cognitive dissonance part of this. The mystifying part to me is the ability and willingness of the church to compel this amazingly capable adult to doubt himself and self-police and basically slap his own hands as if he were some bad little boy for even thinking about reading those essays.
