Advice on how to coach a beginner
I need some advice on how to coach a few beginners.
I’ve been playing poker for 15 years. I prefer NL Holdem tournaments, but I also enjoy cash games. I play both online and in person and do generally well.
I am currently running a Women’s beginner poker league where I teach women how to play and we have a monthly cash game (I’m also a woman, just to be clear). I’ve been running this league for 2 years and we now have 40 members. When we started, I was the only one with any experience with poker (the cash games are a shit show). But now after two years, some of the players are showing some potential. I’d like to start coaching these players, as they are very eager to get better.
My question is, does anyone who has experience teaching/coaching have any advice on where to start? Although these players have been playing for 2 years, they have only experienced about 15-20 cash games, so they are still super beginners. On top of that, the games they have been playing are mostly with other beginners, so they aren’t learning what real game play looks like.
I’m getting them to start playing micros online, but I’m not sure that’s the best way to go about it. This is how I taught myself to play 15 years ago, but it’s a steep (and expensive) learning curve. I also have books they could read, but I think these are too advanced for them still.
Any advice?
