[NSV] My First Keto Powered Half Marathon & a Few Tips Based on What's Worked for Me

When I started keto at the beginning of this year, I was also really wanting to get back into running, and based on past experiences - was worried about it not going so well.

I am writing to share that today I ran a half marathon on no carbs before / during / after and felt strong the whole way.

Still working on my pace and figuring out my electrolytes needs, but considering I got winded walking a mile on a treadmill on January 1st, I'm absolutely thrilled to be here and never looking back!

Oh yeah, I've also lost 45 pounds since January!

Here are my tips for anyone that may benefit (ymmv, pun intended):

  • veggies are your friend; my focus early on was on getting my mitochondria to adapt as quickly as possible; This video opened my eyes to more than a few things.

  • Zero cheat days - this is the number one thing that I think I did wrong in previous attempts at living la vita low carb. My mindset in the past was "I'll suffer through whatever I have to, and treat myself on Saturday" or something along those lines. Now, my mindset is - this is awesome for my body, mind, and soul! No reason to cheat that. Plus, there seems to be some evidence out there that cheating sets your mitochondria back to working off of sugar vs ketones. For this reason, I am not sure I ever fully adapted in the past, and running long distances never got easier.

  • weigh in only once a week - thing change every day. Going keto is a change of heart and mind. No need to fuss over these numbers every day of the week. Chart a course and check in weekly to see how you're doing. Chances are you'll be ahead of the game all the way.

  • don't underestimate the challenges of a changing body - I am not sure I have seen others mention this. I have been overweight physically or at least in my mind for 40 years. It became part of my identity. It felt safe. Melting away 45 pounds in less than half a year is a significant change - and even "good" changes bring their challenges. Good to pay attention to emotional triggers, other addictive behaviors, etc... and make sure you have a good support system.

Looking forward to the journey ahead. Which includes a full marathon in October. Am I nervous. Oh yeah, and psyched to experience my first "bonk-free marathon" :)
