What are some good ways to secure rods?

It appears I've tempted fate for too long and lost a rod overboard. It was in a built in rod holder in the kayak. When I got to my fishing spot, I reached back and it was gone. I paddled back to my launch point to check, but it was gone. I must have knocked it loose with my paddle or something.

I used to use this thick bungee cord, but it kept getting tangled or in the way so I stopped. What are good options?
