GIS freelance work for newbie (halp)

So I'm a first year GIS student was looking into trying to find some freelance GIS work for the summer even if it pays peanuts. Would be nice to have a project or two under my belt and even get a glimpse of my future career path. Thing is I don't think I have the know how to land a freelance gig. Aside from probably digitizing I think that's just about as far as my skill set goes.

Advice plz
