To think about: What happens if there's a 75% miner/network vote to change, but core and theymos refuses to allow binaries that support this change?
Theymos, and core have refused to recognize classic as an alternative and call it an altcoin. The intransigent approach to keep control is showing in the attitude of trying to block AsicBoost, censorship, talk of removing Satoshi coins and talk of changing PoW. None of these reflect a "let the chips fall where they may", but rather all reflect strategies to ensure everything works in favor of keeping control of bitcoin. The result is the current civil war.
Given these moves, it is not inconceivable that if a vote moves against them, that they'll change the PoW, reset the difficulting and refuse any mention of the changes voted on. Classic would fork with the miners, but bitcoin.org and r/bitcoin would still have the majority of web traffic.
The only real hope would be if BitPay, Coinbase and the other major exchanges fail to recognize the remaining 25% network that core and bitcoin.org insist on.
