Switching from mountain bike to road bike for first time. Looking for advice.

I've been riding mountain bikes for all of my life. After cruising the mean streets of LA and riding pavement 100% of the time I want to switch to a road bike. I feel overwhelmed though. Does anyone have any tips of what I should look for? Anything specifically different between road and mountain. Any maintenance tips specific to road bikes? Thanks for the help guys
