[CLAIM] Guatemala

CLAIM

Guatemala has had a long and bloody history. First being inhabited by the Mayan people, it had many tribal kingdoms. The Spanish arrived, and wiped out the native population, and eventually the Spanish took over for good.

Eventually, like the other nations in Latin America, the Guatemalan people rose up, and gained independence. Throughout history they got their share of dictatorships and democracies.

Eventually, another dictator took over in 1931. In 1944 he was forced to resign after many strikes throughout the country. A coup took over, with a Junta lead by several men. In 1950 they held a democratic election, with one of the junta leaders, Jacobo Árbenz taking over.

He was a leftist, and implemented a lot of progressive policies. In 1954, the US would let it stand, and with the help of the CIA, Árbenz resigned and through rigged elections Carlos Castillo Armas became President. After he was assassinated by one of his security guards and another rigged election General Miguel Ydígoras Fuentes.

Throughout a few decades various dictators took control. Leftists guerrilla groups popped up and challenged the various Presidents. After a bloody war, and UN brokering, a representational democracy sprung up in Guatemala.

Now, it's 2029, and after a cut-throat election, former congressman and member of the National Unity of Hope, a leftist party in Guatemala, Julio Lopez has become the new President of Guatemala. The man was born into a modest family, not having access to healthcare or other medical services. From this he got gastrointestinal problems. His father often got sick, and had to go in and out of hospitals a lot, and there were around 7 children in the house. But this didn't stop him. He and his brothers ran the family business, he went to school, and eventually graduated from college. He eventually got a congressional seat, representing the Huehuetenango district.

President Lopez promises for increased relations with immediate neighbors, along with improving relations with nations such as the US, Brazil, Germany, etc. Along with that, he promises for new industry to be built in Guatemala, and to build up the green energy sector of the government.
