Trilogy Playthrough

I am thinking of doing a playthrough from ME1-ME3 but I have never played ME1 before. I have a RL friend who keeps telling me not to even play it because of how dated it is but is it really that bad?

Anyone here play ME1 for the first time in the past 3 years or so and find the gaming experience fun and fluid?
