I'm [24 F] moving to a different state for work and my mom [60 F] isn't taking it well.

Non-Romantic

My mom and I have always had a great relationship. I like talking to her more than anyone else in the world. She's struggled a lot with raising 3 kids [25 M, 24 F and 22 M] on her own and she worked so hard just for us to get the best life possible.

Mom isn't the type of person to get angry for no reason. Sure, she scolds us from time to time but it's usually because we've done something wrong.

I graduated from med school 6 months ago and was waiting for my job placement. There is a huge backlog of doctors in my country (and therefore a longer waiting period) which is why I'm only starting work next month. I spent the last 6 months at home.

My first choice of hospital was in a state 3 hours away by flight. There are a lot of perks for those who choose to serve in that particular state like better hands-on opportunities, higher priority for masters program selection, a huge pay bonus (approx 25% more) and so on. I'll be spending a mandatory 2 years service there.

My mom was initially okay with my decision but once I received confirmation of the job placement (last month), she started making quips at random. An example:

Me: (we were in a mall) I don't want to walk there. It's too far.

Mom: If you dislike distance so much, then don't move to that state.

It was funny at first. After the next dozen times, it wasn't so funny anymore. Not a day passes by without her telling me not to go the that state. When I remind her of all the pros of going there, she yells at me for not choosing a nearer state. It's not like her at all to yell at me.

Two weeks ago, I sat her down and told her that I will miss her a lot and promised to text/skype with her. Then I mentioned all the reasons why I've decided to go there. She was really sad during the entire conversation and didn't say anything. The next day, she offered to fly with me to the state on the 18th of May to house-hunt. I was so relieved that she was being supportive and also because I always feel better when she's around.

A week ago, an unexpected complication occurred (the ministry of health decided to change things at the last minute) which necessitated me to change our flight dates, incurring a hefty fee. It was an easy enough fix but mom blew up. She was angry that it was "one problem after another" and that it was such a waste of money. I let her cool off for a moment and then asked her if this was really about the money. She said "It's not about the money. If you're adult enough to decide to move away, then you're adult enough to go there and find your own house". Then she told me to cancel her ticket and she didn't want to talk to me. I've never been treated this way by my mom and cried the entire night.

The next morning she apologized to me for being so harsh and that everything just became too much for her. She was still going to join me. She apologized again and we hugged.

Since then she's not blown up to that extent but there have been multiple outbursts from her directed at me for all sorts of unreasonable reasons e.g. my luggage being on the floor, my clothes not being in the right bag, me being bitten by mosquitoes, bad traffic.

Needless to say she's taking my leaving very poorly and it's really affecting me. I'm crying all the time from being yelled at by her and also because I'm sad about leaving home.

I've been away from home during med school (2.5 years in a different country and 2.5 years in a different but nearby state). She reacted completely normal during those 5 years. My older brother is in a different country now but will be back home this July. My younger brother still lives with my mom. She also has a lot of friends and a best friend. So it's not like she'll be all alone.

I'm honestly at a loss at what to do or say. If you've been in a similar situation, could you please tell me what to do. I want her to feel better but everything I've said so far doesn't work.

tl;dr: I'm moving to a different state for 2 years. Mom was okay with it until a month ago. She's had a major outburst and several smaller ones which are completely out of character for her. Any advice/suggestion on how to make her feel better about the whole situation?
