League Roundup: Liga Portuguesa, Round 34 - Benfica win the League!
###< Previous Round | Next Round >
Welcome to your Weekly Digest of the Liga Portuguesa! I am your host, u/fijozico! The league has ended in great style, both at the top and the bottom! After 39 years, SL BENFICA ARE 3 TIMES IN A ROW CHAMPIONS OF PORTUGAL!!
– In an unusual setting, Porto and Boavista played the Porto Derby Saturday morning - morning matches are a rarity in the portuguese top flight. The dragões stood up and finished the season in a positive note, by steamrolling their neighbours by 4-0!
– Arouca, already with their European place secured, drew 2-2 against V. Guimarães in a party afteroon at Arouca.
– TONDELA ARE GOING TO PLAY IN THE TOP TIER NEXT SEASON!! After spending 24 weeks in the relegation zone, 21 of them in the last place, they hosted and beat already relegated Académica by 2-0!
– V. Setúbal, in spite ending the season with a 15 match winless streak, stay in the 1st division, after drawing Paços de Ferreira in a goalless match. A reminder that Setúbal had a good start of the season, and was looking into Europe! And with this result, Paços miss out on an European spot!
– And after spending no time in the relegation zone, newly-promoted União da Madeira are relegated back into the 2nd division! At Ribeira Brava, Rio Ave win against União, to secure a place on Europa League's 3rd qualifying round...
– ...also because Estoril visited and lost against Belenenses by 2-1!
– And in the D Day of the title, Moreirense and Marítimo started the afternoon with a 2-1 win for the home team.
– And in the final two matches of the season, Sporting and Benfica both had amazing performances, both winning their matches, but Benfica had the advantage going to the round, and they walk off Champions of Portugal!
Sporting visited and smashed Braga by 4-0...
...and Benfica, in an amazing atmosphere at Estádio da Luz, hosted Nacional and celebrated their 35th title as Champions, after a 4-1 win!
