Going on my first solo trip... Feeling more and more anxious/nervous as my time nears.
So my trip won't be solo for the whole time. I reside in California, so I'm flying out to Philly to meet my best friend, then we're flying to Dublin along with her roommate. We're also visiting Paris and most of the major cities in Italy. Once we hit Rome, however, my friend and her roommate are headed back to the east coast, and I'm on my own for the next two weeks.
If I'm being completely honest, I'm worried about meeting new people. I have an irrational fear that other people will think I'm too introverted. I won't be moving around much, I've booked a hostel in Sorrento, Italy, a beach town I picked out to relax and take it easy before I go back home. I'm looking forward to laying by the beach, casually exploring the area and drinking lots and lots of amazing wine. :) But I'm also quiet when people first meet me. I've been trying to learn the language but haven't gotten very far, for whatever reason Japanese was much easier for me to learn. I'm worried that people I meet won't want to invite me out with them because I'm so reserved at first.
Honestly though, the thing that is causing most of my anxiety is my trip home. The flight I booked has a 23 hour layover in Sweden. I was excited at first and was looking around for a place to crash overnight, but there has been a TON of news coming out about women being attacked/assaulted/raped etc. due to all the refugee issues they're having. I wouldn't be worried if I was with other people, but being this is my first trip on my own out of the country, and the reports I've been hearing are statements by Swedish law enforcement saying if you're female not to go out alone at night time and not to take public transit by yourself. The idea that I'd have to worry about trying to get around/possibly getting lost on TOP of the extra worry of possibly getting assaulted is really scaring me.
Now don't get me wrong, I know for a fact that being assaulted/raped can happen anywhere in the world. I understand that being from the US that stuff happens constantly. But I know the language here, I understand the customs and feel confident about staying out of situations that may put me into a dangerous situation. This is much different, and I'm having trouble keeping my anxiety back. It's really getting to me.
I don't know, I guess I just needed to get this out somewhere... I can't seem to get my thoughts clear about the subject. I can't stop worrying.
Any advice?
