[QUESTION] Why are on-board preamps so prevalent on bass, but not on guitar?
I'm primarily a bass player, though I do dabble on guitar as well. I've played and owned basses from the simplest P bass (20 frets, one split coil pickup, one tone, one volume) to a modern Pedulla (22 frets, soapbar pickups with individual volumes, and a four band preamp with an active/passive toggle switch).
I realized the other day that while there are a lot of different kinds of guitars, I don't think I've ever come across one with a built-in preamp. This is strange to me because most "modern" basses (i.e., non-P/J clones) have active circuitry in them.
Note that this is different than active pickups like some of the EMGs. Usually basses have passive pickups, and then an active buffer/EQ system. The EMGs are actual active pickups, the pickups themselves are actually battery-powered with built-in buffers, but offer no EQ control.
I'm sure that guitarists would like to have more control over their signal, so why isn't this more common?
