New to woodworking, need advice on wood choice for workbench

The work bench plan i have requires five 2x4x8ft boards and two 2'x4'x3/4 mdf sheets. Can someone suggest what materials my 2x4s should be? Pine, cedar, framing wood etc. Also what other wood should I use instead of mdf or is that a good choice already for a bench top?
