Preventative GDV surgery

I have a 6 month old german shepherd puppy who I'm taking to get fixed very soon. The vet recommended that he get his stomach tacked for GDV prevention while under the knife for his neutering since the issue is prominent within the breed. Has anyone dealt with this kind of situation and have any recommendations on if it might be a good idea?
