Questions about GPU's

Build Help

###Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming and some Netflix. Unsure on which games. I currently have a macbook and grew up gaming on my xbox 360.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

All of the above, ideally. But im also not trying to spend a fortune on a monitor.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$800 to 1000. I'm not opposed to going higher as long as its justified.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). [Consider formatting your parts list.] About all I've decided on at this point is: i5 6500 processor DDR4 RAM (probably 2x8 G) A small SSD (120 - 250 G) A larger HDD (1 - 2 T)

Provide any additional details you wish below.

As for the motherboard, I've seen people on here and pcpartpicker using the MSI H170a on similar builds.

I'm mostly concerned about the GPU because I know very little about any of them. Based on looking at completed builds in a similar price range, I was looking at the GeForce GTX 960 or 970 and the Radeon R9 380 or 390. What are your thoughts between these GPU's?

And I'm also a little confused why there is such a wide range of GPU prices for the same chipsets. Why is the MSI GTX 970 (https://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-gtx970gaming4g) $50 more expensive than the Gigabyte GTX 970 (https://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn970wf3oc4gd)?
